Lead generation companies vs running your own ads: which is better for NZ trades?

9 September 2026 · 7 min read

Every trade business in New Zealand ends up choosing between three ways of getting work beyond word of mouth: buying leads from a platform, paying someone to run advertising under your own brand, or doing it yourself. They cost different amounts, they fail in different ways, and none of them is automatically right.

Here's an honest comparison, including where we're the wrong choice.

Option 1: buying leads from a platform

You pay per lead, or you buy credits and spend them on enquiries as they appear. There's no setup, no creative to make, and work can start the same day. That's a genuine advantage when you're new, quiet, or moving into a new area.

The catch is that the enquiry is usually shared. Several businesses buy the same job, so you're competing on price before you've even spoken to the customer, and you pay whether or not you win it. You also build nothing: no audience, no brand recognition, no data of your own. Stop paying and the work stops the same day.

Option 2: ads under your own brand

Here you run Facebook, Instagram or Google ads from your own accounts. The enquiries come to you and nobody else, you set the message, and the pixel and search history you build make future campaigns cheaper to run.

The trade-offs are real too. There's a learning period while the campaigns find the right audience, you carry the ad spend, and you need photos of your work and a fast way of answering enquiries. If you can't reply to a lead within the hour, this option will disappoint you.

Option 3: doing it yourself

Plenty of tradies run their own boosted posts and make money doing it. If you enjoy the marketing side and have time in the evenings, this is the cheapest possible route and there's nothing wrong with it.

Where it usually breaks down is consistency. Campaigns need attention weekly, creative goes stale, and the platforms change constantly. Most owners we speak to did it themselves for a while, got results, then got busy and let it lapse.

How to decide

  • Need work this week and can't fund a build-up period? A lead platform is the pragmatic short-term answer.
  • Want enquiries nobody else is quoting on, and can commit to a few months? Your own ads will be cheaper per won job over time.
  • Have time, patience and a good phone camera? Run them yourself before paying anyone.
  • Can't reply to enquiries within the hour? Fix that first — no option works around a slow phone.

What to check before you sign anything

  • Are the ad accounts and pixel in your business's name?
  • Is there a lock-in contract, and what happens in month three if it isn't working?
  • Are the leads exclusive to you, or shared?
  • What's the total monthly cost — fees and ad spend, separately stated?

Where we sit

We run ads under your own brand, in your own accounts, with no lock-in. If you'd rather test it than take our word for it, we offer a 1-week trial: you cover the ad spend, usually under $300 for the week, and we charge nothing while we prove it works. If a lead platform genuinely suits your situation better, we'll say so.
