How to get more leads as a builder in NZ (without buying shared leads)

29 September 2026 · 6 min read

Word of mouth is still the best source of work for most builders. But it's lumpy — busy one month, quiet the next. The builders with steady pipelines have a few simple systems that bring in enquiries whether or not a past client happens to mention them.

1. Get your Google Business Profile right

It's free and it's often the first thing a homeowner sees. Fill in every service, set your service area, add real project photos regularly, and reply to every review. An empty or out-of-date profile quietly loses you jobs.

2. Ask every happy client for a review

Send the link by text the day you hand over the job, while they're happiest. Reviews that mention the type of work and the suburb help both trust and local search visibility.

3. Photograph every job

Before, during and after. Homeowners hire builders based on work they can see. These photos become your website gallery, your social posts and your best-performing ads.

4. Run ads under your own name

Facebook and Instagram ads showing your finished projects to homeowners in your area work well for renovations, extensions and decks — projects people plan for months. Google Search ads catch people actively looking for a builder now. Both put enquiries in your inbox that nobody else is quoting on.

5. Reply within the hour

The first builder to call back often wins the job. If you're on the tools all day, set up an automatic text reply and a time each day to return calls. Speed matters more than a perfect pitch.

6. Know your numbers

Once you know these, you can put more money into what works and cut what doesn't.

  • How many enquiries did you get last month, and from where?
  • How many turned into site visits, quotes and signed jobs?
  • What did each signed job cost you in marketing?
